the future of conversation

If you look up a word conversation from dictionary, the first thing it says is that it’s a communication (between?) by two, three or more persons/individuals using their mouth. Correct. Well that’s how it was in the 19th century (and before that) and the only persons you could have had a conversation with were your family members, neighbours and a salesclerk, if you went to the village. That was all before the telephone was invented – then you had a chance to call your neighbours to tell them to keep it down, cause you have to wake up early next morning.
But NOW, in the 21st century, the conversation between persons is even more amazing and easier. Thanks to the Internet and the social Media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc and different blogs, I can talk to whoever I want, from whereever in the World and whenever I want. The conversation between persons from Finland and Brazil via the Internet is as simple and fast as between persons who are in the same room. And everything about Social Media and Digital Marketing I learned from the digital marketing course which I (and my classmates) attended and which was lead by Andrea Vascellari. We learnt a lot, I mean starting with Twitter, Delicious continuing with GoogleDocs, GoogleReader and last but not least G.ho.st and of course the basic knowledge about marketing itself. Thank you, Andrea! For our defence I can say this much that we did knew about Facebook before the course.

During the course, Andrea also introduced us Jaffe Juice, whose blogs we’ve read and watched his videos. He also introduced us Jaffe’s second book “Join the Conversation”, which lead us to and idea, that we would also like to join the conversation which lead us to another idea – why not to make a fun, fetching yet interesting video about joining the conversation.
The video itself is about marketing students who are still into traditional media but who are being introduced to new media and they are really fascinated about it, but they also get few questions while getting to know the new media…

Questions that students came up with:

1. How to reach consumers, without making them feel that they are being brainwashed? by Kristina

2. People are so used to be interrupted by pointless 30 seconds spots, will they miss traditional advertisement or feel disoriented in this new conversational marketing era? by Kristiina

What’s the future of advertisement? How brands can get it right in this many-to-many era? by Hille

3. Where stays the line between advertisement and manipulation? I mean the morality of affecting people on such way? by Jaanika

4. Is there a better channel than Internet to join the conversation? by Piret and Merili

5. What about the engagement through real feelings and emotions? This is how I want brands to connect with me. Is it possible, or is it asking too much? by Petri

6. What do you think stop many organizations from joining the conversation? by Mari

I was just watching a video about Twitter. It was an interview with Evan Williams, CEO and Co-Founder of Twitter, on Charlie Rose. It was nice to get to know the background of Twitter a bit better, cause when I first heard of it, I wasn’t the biggest fan. I didn’t find it necessary to let everyone know that I just got out of the shower and now I’m eating a sandwich, cause that’s what Twitter is about – what are you doing. But in the other hand, I don’t have to write about every single thing I’m doing at the moment and I also don’t have to read stuff like this from others accounts
Right, what I also learned watching the video is that it’s extremely popular,I knew that it had more than 6 million users, but by popular I mean is that even celebrities use it: Ashton Kutcher, Britney Spears, John Mayer (“they” say that Twitter is the reason why he and Jennifer Aniston broke up), Ellen DeGeneres etc. and Barack Obama (!). After he had won the elections, he sent out a tweet to thank his supporters…I, myself follow quite many well-known persons, mainly people from radio stations and music-industry. But following a celebrity you should be careful, cause you never know if it’s the right person that you’re following or just some fake-account.
Another fun thing about Twitter is that news (here I’m talking about world news, breaking news etc) get to public or to people much faster than on different news web sites or via traditional media and all thanks to the Twitter users and their mobiles. Every new/interesting/shocking/remarkable thing that happens in the world spreads so fast cause people talk (or in this case – people “tweet”) and the Domino effect comes along. From one to another and another and another and…

Even though it’s such a phenomenal social networking and micro-blogging service and everyone around the world uses it (even the celebrities!), I’m still not the biggest fan of it (I do have to admit that I use it quite often). This is the part where I agree with Jaffejuice and his thoughts about Twitter. It’s spring time, go out and enjoy the sun (I should do the same…)

spreading ideas

I just saw Seth Godin’s video “Sliced bread and other marketing delights” (on juutuub) and it surprised me in many ways. First, I didn’t know, that slice bread was invented in 1910′s by Otto Rohwedder. I first saw sliced bread in the late 1990′s (if I remember correctly) in Estonia. It may have been in Estonia before, but my family started to buy/use it quite late. Aren’t we fast…But now the sliced bread is the most popular product, I think the popularity comes from the fact that people are lazy (and here I’m talking from my own experiences).

Second, Coke Japan comes out with a new product every three weeks (!). Is it really necessary? OK, it’s nice to have a variety of products, but enough is enough. And, when they’ve come out with a new idea, they also have to “share” it with people (also know as the consumers) who would buy these things and make them rich (I’m not only talking about Coke Japan, but every producer in the world). And nowadays it’s very easy to spread the ideas and for that we have to thank TV, radio, newspapers/magazines, the Internet etc. But people are tired of all the ads – we’ve seen them enough and over and over and over again. Usually when a commercial brake starts on TV, either i switch the channel or go to the kitchen to make a sandwich. We want something new, something fresh, something remarkable. (Actually what I meant was “I want something…”, but I didn’t want to sound selfish). For example – 40ft tall dog made out of bushes in the middle of NYC – is remarkable.

There were lot’s of other interesting facts in the video, but those two were the first that caught my attention.

I’m not saying that advertising is bad. NO, this is the way we find out about new products. But producers should be careful, cause there are lots of similar products out there and people are very talented ignoring things they’ve seen before and weren’t interested in.

They should do what Seth Codin said:

1. Design rules now
2. Safe is risky – average products for average people is risky, safe is to fing a certain target and being remarkable
3. very good is bad, it’s boring, no ones gonna notice it.
Plus, to find a good way how to spread the idea.

Every new topic that Seth Codin talked about was extremely interesting, surprising and (for a young and naive student as I am, who belives in every new thing she hears ) very remarkable. I liked it, a LOT!

Second – i just love the band! They’re from 70′s/80′s but people still love them, cause they’re classic!

Yesterday I got back from Estonia where I stayed for a week almost, main reason why I went there was to see my friends and family, but also to do one of my schoo lworks. I was quite sad to leave, cause A. the weather was wonderful and B. the weather was wonderful. It was, actually IS, beautiful srping time in Estonia – the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming and people are actually happy ( i blame the Sun).

The school work, the most important reason why I went to Estonia, is called radiodocument. What it’s about is we do an interview with someone, We edit it on computer, add some different music tracks and then burn it on CD and hope to get a good grade from the teacher. Mine isn’t actually the interview-type of document, this one is like gallup. I ask questions from random people and in the end I give a summary. My theme was Tallinn – why people decided to visit Tallinn and did they like it there. Cause it’s early spring time, there weren’t lots of tourists there, but I had a chance to interview some. Many of them, who I interviewed, were from Spain (!), the Finland, USA etc.

Anywho… now back in Finland for my last period, 7 weeks to go and then, hopefully, I will graduate the Suupohjan Vocational School. What will happen after the graduation – where will I go or what will i do – I have know idea. Actually i have few ideas, but i don’t want to jinx it, so… Good luck to all of us (V2a 2008/2009)!!!!

so, it’s been a while since i last posted something here, even though I sort of promised to be a bit more active but…ups..
anywho, for my defense i can say this much that I’ve active posting stuff on my blog, just that it’s another blog, sry… (traitor as i am…)

anyway, as i sayd couple of weeks (acutally almost a month) ago, every time i post here, i also add “a song of the day” and today i got someting fresh. The band is called Vampire Weekend and the song i love/live/adore etc is “A-Punk”
the reason why i love this song is because i heard it first when i was in England and it brings back all the memories plus the song it self is very cool, so here it is:

busy day…

actually not that busy. today i took some pictures of my classmates and teachers for my album. it went quite well, got all the students and mosr the teachers, only two are missing (will do them on monday). At the beginning i had some problems getting the lighting right, in the end it wasn’t perfect but at least i got my job done.

anywho…we’ve had two sunny days in a row here in finland, which is wonderful and also surprising. It’s been quite a long when i last saw the Sun – i think here’s one reason why i’m happy today
those sunny days makes me miss the summer…people drinking coffee (or probably beer) at the open-air cafeterias, playing different games in the parks, lying by the beach and just relaxing…2,5 months to go….
